What is Dermaplaning?

What is Dermaplaning?

Say hello to Dermaplaning, sometimes known as epidermal levelling, a treatment to both exfoliate the skin and remove fine, vellus hairs on the face.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, dermaplaning is one of the easiest ways of removing unwanted hair from the face.

In the same way that shaving works, it uses a painless blade to gently scrape away facial hair (often referred to as ‘peach fuzz’) and rids the skin of any build-up of dead skin cells, all of which can contribute to making your skin look dull or uneven.

Just like exfoliation, it removes any barriers which would stop your skincare from penetrating – meaning your products often work much more effectively after a treatment

Dermaplaning results in a healthier and more hydrated complexion.

This treatment is performed by a highly trained and qualified skin therapist here at Nicola Quinn beauty & Day Spa in Christchurch, using a very sharp and sterile surgical blade to gently scrape away dead skin cell build up (which can make your skin look dry, dull or uneven) as well as removing the fine vellus hairs over the face.

Once this process is complete, a clean, active serum or hydrating lotion is applied to your face to hydrate and brighten the skin. The result is a deep skin exfoliation, a baby-smooth face, and the perfect glowing base for your foundation.

While the thought of a blade sliding across your face is a scary one, it doesn’t actually hurt at all. Think of it like shaving any other part of your body. Can you feel it? Yes. Does it hurt? Not if you’re doing it right. Again, that’s why it’s super important to leave dermaplaning to professionals.

Right after the procedure, you can expect some slight redness in your face, but not always, and if you do, it’ll fade quickly.

Contrary to what we’ve been told about body hair all our life, these fine hairs on our face will not grow back thicker or darker.

The hair is cut straight across, so it may feel slightly different when it comes back (although they are so thin you’ll barely notice!), but this hair will continue to grow back at the same speed, and won’t grow dark, thick or long like the hairs on our legs.

The purpose of these tiny, translucent vellus hair is to insulate the skin, however in modern life this isn’t something we need – not to mention it can contribute to build up of dead skin cells and grime. By removing this hair, our skin looks and feels clearer and brighter.

Being that this treatment includes a deep exfoliation of your skin, it’s best to wait one month between appointments, and your skin should stay glowing and smooth during this time.

The best thing about Dermaplaning is that it is a quick and simple treatment with absolutely no pain or recovery time, although you’ll need to be diligent with your mineral SPF afterwards to protect your fresh new layers of skin from sun damage.

You may also want to skip makeup for a few hours, as with any exfoliation treatment your skin may be a little sensitive straight afterwards.

Our Dermaplaning Facial is one of our most popular party and event prep treatments due to its ability to create such a smooth and resurfaced skin tone. Once you try it, you’ll be addicted!

Makeup application becomes easier, and the finished result is transformational, resulting in smooth cheeks that reflect radiance and none of those facial hair shadows above the lips that can make us feel a little self-conscious.

It’s an ideal alternative to (sometimes) uncomfortable face waxing or threading methods too, which can cause redness and irritation for some.

It’s hair removal and skin rejuvenation in one! All you’ll need now is a glam manicure and brow refresh for a full party glow-up.

We recommend booking your Dermaplaning treatment one week out from your event.

Dermaplaning and shaving your face are very similar, but the main difference is that dermaplaning (again, performed by a professional Skin Therapist ) delivers a more thorough exfoliation, while shaving your face at home is a more budget-friendly, DIY option, and really only tackles peach fuzz.

Although we advise against trying it at home. Sharp blades and DIYs shouldn’t go together!
